I want to clear the line up a bit..shake out the dust, see if anything needs replacing, etc. (since my phone/internet is not so good these days and my internet company is not getting good readings on my line. i do not like using those 2/1 or 3/1 adapters like the one shown in the photo, they can easily be damaged by being knocked into.. if needed i prefer these http://www.amazon.com/GE-TL96131-Telephone-5-Jack-Adapter/dp/B00009UHBY because they have a cord that connects to the jack, and the adapter can be screwed to the wall...

also, the jack has paint on it, which may indicate that there may be paint inside of the pins of the jack - also indicating that the jack has been there for a while, and may possible have some water damage - check the contacts/pins to ensure that they are not greenish or black in color - they should be shiny copper color...

also the wire that is in place is the really old single pair wire, (and is held onto the wall with tacks as that old style wire normally is)
