The Headphones from Star Trek
There's music and there is Music...
There's music you like. Ther is music that excites you. And there's music that bores you to tears. Aw well..
Earphones are actually superb devices.
When I used to be a kid I was always surprised by the Star Trek teleporting devices. Those Trekkies would simply push a button, enter a portal, and they'd get instantly teleported to some different world. Cool, eh?
I wanted one of those things too!
But think about it. What does being teleported really mean? We are living in a world in which our senses are all we get. As far as we are concerned, what our senses let us know, is what's truly going down to us
And what does music do to ourselves? It takes one of our most crucial senses, our hearing, into a different, hopefully heavenly, world.
But there is a caveat! You frequently begin to hear your fave music, and all of a sudden the builders from the close by street start hammer the ground, releasing horrid noises that overwhelm your humble "world-teleport" musical experiment. Eventually also your telephone rings, and you get interrupted, and the game is over.
Hence are you actually into a different world when you are listening to music?
Most likely yes. In truth often not. You are very far from the Star Trek teleport gizmo.
But with headphones, plenty of it may change.
Go get a good pair of in-ear noise isolating earphones, like those best iPhone headphonesthat are generally available. They're superb! You stop getting noise and audio interruptions from the external world. If you shut your eyelids, it's truly like marching into a world that's full of music, ethereal and that's it! Nothing else.
That's why I say that there is "music and Music". Music truly needs to be listened to with a good pair of phones, that isolate you from the external world.
Only in this fashion you're going to take the full benefits of one of the most enthralling features of listening to music: to get disconnected from the present daily world, and to step into a whole different environment that is made from dreams, music, excitement and feelings.
Welcome to the true poetry of music!
Now, some will disagree. "Who cares about being disconnected. I just need a tune to pass my time, and use music to get a little bit of entertainment".
Me? I'll take a great pair of earphones every time. I need to get teleported. I need to be in Star Trek!
