Radio Controlled Cars for Newbies
Radio controlled cars are an exceedingly exciting and fun hobby for young and old alike. One of the first questions to answer if you are an RC car newbie is should you choose electric or nitro powered.
As a general rule nitro RC cars are really best for someone who has gained a little experience. And that experience is best acquired with an electric rc car.
Electric RC cars are simpler. They tend to be far less noisy and certainly require a lot less maintenance than the nitro powered models. But the downside is that they don't have the realism, speed and power of the nitro powered models.
But electric RC cars are available in some great designs that are a whole lot of fun and can hold their own against nitro powered models. I always recommend buying at least two battery packs and mayber even three or four if you have the budget. Battery packs can generally be charged in around 3 minutes but some only last for about 5 minutes so it is always worthwhile buying a few to make the most of your car.
My personal favourite models are off-road dune buggys that I like to race around the sand dunes on some nearby beaches. I always take along a whole bunch of fully charged battery packs just so that I can make the most of my time in the sand dunes.
A big advantage of electric over nitro powered RC cars is the ease of maintenance. Like real cars nitro powered rc cars use real engines and these need the same sort of maintenance as the full size models. Electric RC cars are much simpler and therefore much more suitable for beginners and youngsters.
You can find both electric and nitro RC cars in kit for and this can bring another aspect of enjoyment and satisfaction to the hobby. Building your own RC car can be enormously satisfying and is a great learning experience. But, again, I recommend starting with an electric model and then moving on to a nitro powered car if you find you enjoy the hobby.
My car battery drains overnight unless I pull the "radio battery" fuse?
I have a 2003 olds alero... Car was fine until a cd got stuck in the cd player... then the battery would drain over and over, I finally began to pull the "radio battery" fuse, and that worked, I figured the radio was somehow still running with the cd stuck. I finally was able to disconnect the radio and fich out the cd, the car was fine all day, so I figured the issue was solved, and of course...this morning the battery is dead, so something in the radio is still draining the battery (ps I had a new battery etc, its not the battery, it takes a charge and jumps well). Taking the fuse in and out is such a pain, its on the passenger side, and for short trips its annoying, but I wanna listen to music lol. Also after this happened I can't use any of the buttons on the radio, no lights on it work, I can only dial the radio manually... HOW CAN I FIX THIS!!!??? Thanks for your help!
I don't think buying a new radio will work, since the issue is in the wiring...
After a battery gets drained down over and over like that, it's probably weak and dying. You can get it checked for free at autozone. From your description I'm sure your battery is on it's last leg. You may need a new one.
Transistor pioneer Norman Krim dies at 98 (Engadget)
A man who helped make our world smaller died last week. As noted in the _New
York Times _obituary linked below, Norman Krim didn't invent the transistor,
but he was a driving force behind its use, having persuaded his employer,
Raytheon, to manufacture them on a large scale. They were designed for use in
hearings aids initially but, as _IEEE Spectrum's_ Harry Goldstein explains,
some later batches proved too "noisy" for that purpose and wound up in the
hands of hobbyists instead, who used them in a variety of electronic projects.
Krim was also intent on making things smaller even before the transistor, and
led a team at Raytheon in the late 1930s that developed miniaturized vacuum
tubes for use in battery-powered radios. Later in his career, he was also
involved the early days of the Radio Shack chain, buying two stores in Boston
then expanding to seven before selling the business to the Tandy Corporation.
He was 98.
