Acronyms Of Internet Phone Technology
I know that a business voip provider basically means a business pays the provider to have a phone service that makes phone calls over the internet, but what does voip stand for and what are all those other abbreviations? pbx, sip, qos?
VoIP is the acronym for Voice-over Internet-Protocol. Voip means that you can make a phone call from any digital device that has a speaker, mic, and access to the internet. Business Voip provider phone services are much cheaper that the traditional land-line phone services. There are actually some free Voip services used by residential voip and business voip users alike, one example you may have heard of is skype. But, for a business phone communication system to work with voip they will need a phone system with many more features provided by a business voip provider. A business voip provider will most likely provide a business with hosted pbx as well.
What does pbx mean? It's the acronym for Private-Branch-Exchange which probably doesn't mean much to you either. A really old example of a pbx is the old phone switch boards used way back in the day when you picked up the phone and got the operator on the other end. The operator would ask you who you wanted to call and then connect you by putting a cable from your phone line to the phone line you wanted to talk to. Essentially that's the function of the pbx. It routes phone calls, only the pbx is in a computer phone system. A business voip provider that provides hosted pbx just means that the business using that business voip provider services is also using that business voip provider pbx phone system, connecting to the pbx phone system via internet. The benefit of using a hosted pbx is that a business doesn't have to pay for an expensive pbx phone system, they just pay the hosted pbx business voip provider for their services.
Since business voip provider phone calls are all made over the internet--voip--the quality of voice data transfer is essential for a quality phone call. This is where QoS and SIP come in.
QoS stands for Qualtiy-of-Service. The QoS is the part of the business voip provider phone system that prioritizes data traffic. When you make a voip phone call using your business voip provider services, voice packets of data travel using your internet broadband line. The QoS on a business voip provider phone system just makes sure that those voice packets of data are prioritized and travel in the correct order. If the QoS on a business voip provider phone system isn't doing its job then you get choppy and static phone call conversations.
SIP means Session-Initiation-Protocol. The SIP on a business voip provider phone system helps transfer the voice data (and video if you're using video) via the internet. The SIP on a business voip provider phone system is the controller of beginning, ending of voip phone calls and voice data travel. The SIP on a business voip provider phone system is mostly used in video or multi-media voip situations.

This week was all about money. I used Google Wallet to buy gas -- and got a
video demo -- found some 10-cent Android apps and worked out a way to get free
calls over a data network thanks to Android's SIP support for VoIP.
