Friction Between People Can Occur With Hearing Loss
When a partner suddenly suffers a huge loss of hearing it can be tough for the other person to comes to te rms with it all and deal with it.
You need to realise that the person going through the hearing loss is going to change a lot and that for the first couple of months they may get a bit mad with it, you have to deal with this because if you are getting angry too it is only going to make matters a lot worse on everyone.
A hearing aid is not easy to get to use and it takes time for a person to adjust to it, even more so if it is one of those bone anchored hearing aids. The best thing that I would advise you do is to actually start learning the sign language with them. Sitting at home shouting at them until they can hear you is something that nobody should do so make sure you knuckle down and try to learn.
If it is just the two of you in the home then silence can be a bit of a shocker and like I have just previously mentioned I would say that the best way to combat this is to learn the sign language. One of the main reasons that people get angry with it is because it is hard to live with to begin with.
If you think that your partner may actually be suffering from a bit of hearing loss then the best thing to do is actually get them out for a hearing aid hearing assessment because it is always better to be safe than sorry.
I know that the first couple of months are going to be hard but if you work together you will find that it can be done together!
Do people with hearing loss experience a decreased quality of life as a result of low self esteem?
I am a senior at Wilmington University who is trying to compile data for my senior thesis. I am trying to determine if there is a correlation between low self-esteem and quality of life for those who suffer from mild to severe hearing loss. Thanks for your help!
There is definitely a relation between hearing loss and depression not sure if low self esteem is the right word. Yes when older people start to lose their hearing they often regress socially and stop going to group events or going out at all as things get harder and harder for them to enjoy due to their hearing loss. You will probably find differences in people who lost their hearing when they were older versus those who were born with it. I was born with hearing loss and grew up very shy. Not necessarily a problem with self esteem just quiet and reserved. I made plenty of friends in small groups and then was able to learn to cope in larger group situations if I knew some of the people there well. This is a great thesis idea - good luck!
