BUSINESS PHONE SYSTEMS - UPGRADE OR BUY NEW ?
It’s often said that an organisation’s best asset is their employees - but they need structures and systems to preserve and enhance their value. The other side of the coin is that employee value is easily eroded by a ineffective support systems such as outdated communication systems.
A vital aspect in enhancing employee value is an effective business communication system. These are vital to business efficiency and success, but scant attention is often paid to them.
The other reality is that most organisations will face the reality of evaluating their telephone system at some stage and the choices of the various technologies and developments can be confusing. People don't seem to have a problem keeping abreast of what's happening in the world of computers and mobile telecommunication, but when it comes to business phones, we tend to disregard them because they're just a practical necessiity. They may be a lot less exciting and interesting, but nonetheless, they're essential.
Another factor is whether to buy a whole new system or try and upgrade the existing one. Whatever the chosen route, the decision should only be made after thorough research. Putting in the effort early on will prevent costly mistakes in the long run.
The best way to start is to talk to a specialist in business phone system solutions. Treat them like you would treat any other potential supplier – investigate and communicate. Shop around – get good advice, find people who provide comprehensive support and back-up service and find the best deal. Ensure you're satisfied with the answers you get.
What should you ask?A starting point is to ask WHY you want or need to change or upgrade your office phones. Business phones aren’t only about communication and efficiencies. They also make a statement about your business – and can influence how your business is perceived.
Ask what your organisation needs - now and going forward? This could affect your choice of system, whether analogue or digital and whether you want VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol). An ip phone system can mean savings for your organisation as well as improved flexibility and mobility.
Before you upgrade or buy new, get a handle on what your current system is costing you so that your decision can be factually based. And always ask your employees (your best asset) what they want from their office phones – they’re the ones using them!
Here’s a quick look at some of the questions you should be asking about your current office phone system :
- How reliable is it? Are there maintenance issues ie frequency and cost?
- Is capacity an issue and are calls being dropped?
- Are the complaints from customers?
- How hard (or how easy) is it to locate staff members? And what are the current messaging systems like – where are the gaps?
- Is the existing system deficient in terms of features and functionality?
- Does it make practical and financial sense to upgrade the current system?
It’s also important to identify the features you will need into the future (eg enhanced voice mail, desktop faxing, ip phones, call reporting, remote locations, blue tooth headsets, wi-fi phones, advertising on hold to name but a few). Try and ascertain the value of these on your productivity and therefore on your profitability.
Ask the professionals to evaluate your existing system and determine whether an upgrade is possible or whether a new system is required. They will be able to tailor-make a digital phone system that will meet your current and future needs, and that will meet your budget requirements too.
Self-Healing Circuits Extend Gadget Life (Mobiledia)
Engineers have developed "self-healing circuits" for electronics and
batteries, an invention that could lead to longer gadget life and enhanced
durability.
Today's mobile gadgets are tiny and loaded with features, making their
circuitry delicate and complex. The failure of a single component often leads
to trashing the whole device, since the multilayered, integrated circuits and
batteries required to power complex devices are nearly impossible to access
and repair.
Engineers at the University of Illinois came up with a solution: microcapsules
filled with liquid metal and dispersed along the length of a circuit. When the
circuit cracks, disrupting the electrical connection, the capsules break. The
liquid metal inside them covers the crack and hardens, repairing the circuit
and restoring the flow of electricity. The entire process takes just a few
seconds.
In tests, 90 percent of samples "healed" to 99 percent of their original
conductivity. The process also requires no human intervention, and only the
microcapsules near the crack open, so the others remain intact to perform
future repair jobs.
The engineers envision the technology working in aviation and space
exploration, but say it also has potential to create more sustainable mobile
devices, for example, if mobile phone buttons stopped working ...
